This is entirely possible. In a world where one has forgotten what is important, it is logical that the clues to whom is correct to meet and whom is not would be difficult to find.

A challenge typically has a set way to overcome it. If one must take a test that is challenging, they study. If one must run a marathon, they train. But perhaps there is indeed a way to overcome this - meeting with more in this place. It has some small potential.
